Most people have grasped the general concept of what a gear is, and what it does, but they likely don’t know that there are various kinds of gears that each perform completely different jobs in different industries. In order for you to make sure that you’re getting the right gears for your project, here are a few of the most common types.
Spur Gears.
Spur gears are the single most common kind of gear. They’re the ones that people think of when they conjure up an image of what a gear looks like. They’re the ones with straight teeth, and look like cogs. Such devices as washing machines, electric screwdrivers and more utilize them. Interestingly, auto manufacturers don’t use spur gears in cars, because they can create a lot of noise when two engage.
Bevel Gears.
Bevel gears are shaped like cones, with teeth facing outwards. Most gears mesh perpendicularly, but bevel gears mesh at a 90 degree angle. That being said, bevel gears can be designed to fit at other angles as well if need be. There are different types of bevel gear, which include spiral, straight, and hypoid bevel gears. They’re used to change the direction of a gear, as commonly seen in hand drills.

The interesting thing about worm gears is that they can easily turn a gear, but the gear won’t turn the worm. The worm gear’s angle is so shallow that when the other gear tries to turn it, friction will hold it in place. They’re commonly used in rolling mills, presses, and mining equipment.
